Making-Of #2: Photo-based earth
This little making-of is in response to a discussion going on over at Newtek’s Disccusion Forums. Thanks JackN and Weepul!
It’s short, but I go over how the earth in the opening shot was created using photos mapped onto 3D geometry. Enjoy!

Most excellent… Thanks for taking the time to show how you did this.
I will give you credit for the technique in the future when I try this out!

Hey no problem Jack.
Thanks for giving me a reason to show it.
Let me know how the method works for you… it doesn’t give you much flexibility, but if you know what you’re going for, it can give you some great results.
And thanks for leaving a comment on the site! You’re the first person outside of my circle of friends to do so.

Whoa man - good job on the cleanup of the earth. Looks like the orginal photo didn’t give you much to work with. But the final composite or whatever looks great.

Yo J-matt.
Thanks for commenting bro.
Yeah, while looking for the original image to make that screencapture… I was surprised myself at how crappy it was.

Hey man, things looks really professional, you certainly know what you’re doing. Now bring on the characters!!!!

Hey Gian. Thanks for the comment. I’m still at that newbie stage with blogs and its cool to see the comment number grow.
Characters eh? Well, they’re baking right now as we speak. Stay tuned for that stuff.
Judging by your awesome demo reel, I think your gonna like them.
And I gotta tell you, it was humbling watching your character animation. Really great stuff.

Hey Wes, thanks a lot for the comment on the reel. I was thinking about doing something like your work but based on animation this summer, when I finally will have some free time. What are you using for the screen cast ? Cause I’m on a Mac too…

I’ve used two.
Started out on Snap Z Pro:

Then switched to iShowU:
http://shinywhitebox.com/home/home.html
It’s like $20. Not too bad.
I screwed up on the frame rate for the last two movies, but that stutter-y look shouldn’t be a problem in the future.
I found iShowU to be less flashy, and simpler to use.

Amazing! I was actually a little more curious about the second, close-up half of the entry sequence. But it is a gorgeous little video, and these breakdowns are fascinating!
Great job…

That’s next on the list. There is an interesting story, almost tragic, story behind that shot.

Yea it would be great to see a breakdown of that second shot too Wes, its all fantastic work. You inspired me to learn!

Excellent work!
I have to say, I just found you, and found, through the mysterious links on the internet, your work (I think the first video of yours that I saw was “Work in Progress”.)
Aaanyways, let me admit that I have absolutely no design experience or even any behind-the-scenes cg exposure whatsoever. Regardless, I still really loved the videos, and the detailed (yet simplified, I know) explanations of how and why you chose to use this or that method.
Great work! I look forward to seeing more of, well, this. Thanks!

Hey there Brian. Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you liked the making-ofs too. Things have been quiet for a bit, but I’ve been gathering a crew, and we’re working slowly but surely on posting cool new stuff. The main character should be revealed sometime soon if we’re on track.
All the best.
